Hans S. Larsen was born in April 1858 in Yderby, Odden, Sjolland, Denmark. In 1865 his parents were baptized as Mormons and in 1866, the family immigrated to the United States. His mother and younger brother died on the voyage and his father and sister died soon after in New York. In 1868 he arrived in Salt Lake City, and lived with a woman who took him.
